Jonathan and Dorothy Luethy
Jonathan was raised on a chicken farm in New Jersey as the sixth child in a family of nine children. As a Christian family, they attended church weekly and Jonathan was born again while still a youth. With the goal of becoming a missionary pilot he entered Moody Bible Institute in 1971. However, God redirected his steps and upon graduation from Moody as a missions major he then enrolled in Calvary Bible College of Kansas City where he met his future wife. Further schooling led him to Capital Bible Seminary where he received both the M.A. and Th.M. degrees. His interests include reading biographies, woodworking, and hiking.
Dorothy was also raised in a Christian home. Her father was a pastor and she was the oldest of six children. Her mother led her to the Lord as a young child and she always enjoyed the visiting missionaries that spoke at their church. She graduated from Calvary Bible College with a degree in Biblical Studies and was also very active in the music department. Her interests include piano, reading, and crafts. Jonathan and Dorothy were married in 1978. After serving two years as an interim pastor in Maryland, the Luethys arrived in Japan on December 1, 1984. Upon the completion of formal language study, the Luethys moved to the town of Hikari in 1990 where they are currently involved in church planting with their teammates Bobby and Hillary Baden. Ministry outreaches include evangelistic Bible studies, discipleship of the believers, Sunday morning worship services, cooking, craft, child rearing and English classes, and a yearly Ladies Christmas Luncheon. A branch church has been opened in Hirao (1/2 hour from Hikari) where the Badens live and contacts are being made for this new church plant.
Many summers they host and mentor college students interested in ministry in Japan. The Luethys are empty nesters with their three children and nine grandchildren living in the states. The church in Hikari called Nijigaoka Christ Church has a Japanese home page http://church.jp/nijigaoka that you can look at. If you would like to contact them directly please do so at [email protected]. They send out weekly prayer updates that you can receive upon request to their email address.
